After having been granted PHREB Level 2 re-accreditation for year 2017-2019 last year, the BRTTH-IRB strives to achieve the highest award (Level III) given among Research Ethics Committees in the country. Simultaneously, the BRTTH-IRB also aims to be recognized by FERCAP - a project of the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Training and Research Programme in Tropical Diseases for Asia and the Western Pacific.

The general objective of the Accreditation/Survey was to assist the BRTTH-IRB in reviewing its practices and appraise its performance against the PHREB standards for accreditation and FERCAP standards. The Joint PHREB-FERCAP Team were: Dr. Cristina E. Torres – Survey Coordinator (FERCAP), Dr. Milagros M. Viacrusis – Lead Surveyor (FERCAP), Dr. Sonia E. Bongala – Accreditor (PHREB), Prof. Teresita De Guzman – Accreditor (PHREB).

The 4-day Accreditation/ Survey visit was also an opportunity for the invited ERCs within and outside the Bicol Region to be trained on the processes and good practices in setting-up an effective Ethics Committee. The thirteen (13) trainees came from three participating agencies: Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Department of Health Regional Office V and the Bicol Medical Center. After completion of recommendations, the awarding for the PHREB Level III Accreditation will be at Baguio City in August 2018 during the PNHRS Week Celebration, while for the SIDCER-FERCAP Recognition, will be at Taiwan by November 2018 during its annual conference.
