In celebration of Hypertension Awareness Month and commemoration of the centennial year of the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH), a Simultaneous Hospital-wide Blood Pressure Screening was conducted last May 17, 2018. As an extension of the advocacy of our Hypertension Clinic, the said activity aimed to screen for hypertension in at least 100 participants for one hour in the morning and in the afternoon.

Ten (10) hypertension kiosks were set up in the hospital that covered the following areas: Triage areas of the Outpatient and Emergency Departments, Administration Building, and Clinical Areas (PhilMed, Philmix, Medical Ward, Isolation Ward, Surgery Ward, OB Complex, and Pay Old). Simultaneous Blood pressure screening was done from 8:00-9:00AM and 1:00-2:00PM. The medical interns and clerks manned the kiosks and were supervised by the resident-in-c harge/clerks monitor per department.

A total of 359 participants comprised of personnel, ambulatory patients, and visitors or watchers in the wards were screened for hypertension. Seventy six (21%) of them were noted to have BP> 140/90, hence advised BP monitoring and workup on follow up at OPD.

This is in support of World Hypertension League’s goal to reach 10 Million blood pressures taken globally in the one month leading up to World Hypertension Day (WHD).  A lecture on hypertension awareness was also delivered during the 1st Magayon Health and Wellness Expo 2018 held on May 9-12, 2018 at Ayala Malls, Legazpi City. This was aired live over DZGB AM radio station and was replayed over the weekend, hence reaching a wider audience.
