The Department of Laboratories and Pathology of the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital is a duly licensed Clinical Laboratory, Blood Bank, HIV screening and G6PD Confirmatory Test laboratory located at the ground floor of the Bicol Regional Heart Center. It is currently staffed by a) three Medical Specialists/Pathologists, board certified by the Philippine Society of Pathology, b) two Medical Officer IV, c) one Medical Technologist V, d) three Medical Technologist IV, e) six Medical Technologist III, f) one Chemist, g) ten Medical Technologist II, h) one Nurse II, h) five Nurse I, i) seven Medical Technologist I, j) seven Medical Laboratory Technician, k) eight Laboratory Aides, l) nine job orders, and m) two Administrative Assistant I.
It is divided into seven sections, namely: Blood Bank/Serology, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry/Immunology, Clinical Microscopy, Microbiology, Histopathology, and Receiving/Releasing. Each section has a medical technologist section head and a supervising section pathologist.
The Laboratory regularly participates in the National External Quality Assurance Program for Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, G6PD, Parasitology, Serology, and Bacteriology.

- General Public subject to proper filling up of forms, proper specimen collection and patient preparation, and availability of reagents and materials.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?
- Properly filled up forms;
- Proper payment of corresponding fee and/or securing pertinent social service requirements;
- Correct patient preparation e.g. fasting, etc.;
- Correct specimen placed in the correct container or vial.
TOTAL RESPONSE TIME

- OPD cases are considered as Routine and are generally accepted from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday-Friday (except holidays) and 7:30 am to 12 noon on Saturdays and Holidays, but maybe cut off as early as 10 am depending on the bulk of specimens received or for whatever other technical reason.
- * This is the TAT (turn around time) for a single test to be performed by a med tech. If other tests are being performed simultaneously, the TAT increases proportionately, particularly in the morning. The TAT may also be affected by unforeseen/ sudden equipment malfunction. If projected to be more than an hour beyond the given TAT, the client will be given the option to either refund or wait until the equipment becomes operational.
- Microbiology:
- 1 working day for Gram’s Stain
- 3-7 working days** for Culture and Sensitivity
- ** Microbiology results are released on an interim basis starting from the 2nd day of the culture.
- Histopathology:
- Cytology/ FNAB/ pap smears: 4 working days***
- Small biopsy specimen: 7 working days***
- Medium-Large biopsy specimen: 7-10 working days***
- ***Depending on the difficulty of the case, some cases may require the opinion of other pathologists or communication with the clinician hence a longer TAT.

MISSION
The Department of Laboratories of the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital will serve as one of the premiere laboratories in Legazpi City as well as referral center of the Bicol region. It will provide routine and special laboratory procedures in the fields of Hematology, Clinical Microscopy, Clinical Chemistry, Histopathology, Blood Banking and Serology. The department aims to deliver fast, accurate, and reliable results especially for In-patients (both charity and pay) as well as to the patients in the Out-patient and ER department.
VISION
The Department of Laboratories of the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital will be one of the most advanced, fully automated and computerized laboratories in the Bicol region, with technology acceptable worldwide in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients. The department will be staffed by a highly competent pathologist, medical technologists, and support staff to maintain the highest standard of quality laboratory service and care to the patients.
