Open Heart Surgeries Conducted at BRTTH
The Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) in collaboration with the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) conducted a series of open-heart surgeries from May 9 - 15, 2021. During the week-long activity held at the BRTTH Heart Center Building, 5 patients with severe coronary heart disease underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) operations, and 1 patient underwent mitral valve replacement.
An existing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two institutions has enabled BRTTH to be a contracted hospital for the PhilHealth Z-benefit package that includes CABG, and allows for a team of specialists from PHC to fly in to assist the BRTTH team, effectively precluding the need for patients to travel to Manila to avail of complicated and highly technical cardio-thoracic procedures that entail great discomfort and expenses for both patient and accompanying relatives. Not only has this arrangement eased a burden on the part of the patients, but it has also significantly decreased local mortalities related to cardiac abnormalities.
The crew of specialists regularly coming to Legazpi City to perform CABG and other similar procedures with the very competent BRTTH OR and CCU teams are Dr. Samuel Andin (cardiothoracic surgeon), Dr. Rex Villagracia (cardio-anesthesiologist), Dr. Jennifer Ann Cantre (adult cardiologist/intensivist), and Mr. Aldrin Dela Cruz (cardio-perfusionist). The BRTTH team is headed by Dr. Greg Aniceto Bergonio (cardiothoracic surgeon), and cardiologists Dr. Narciso Thad Ciocson and Dr. Arbel Perete.
The continuous implementation of the MOA between BRTTH and PHC is a step towards fulfilling the former’s dream of becoming “Bicol’s Road To Total Healthcare” and achieving the BRTTH vision of being an end-referral hospital in the region.
